What can be said about Helga G. Pataki?? Well, she's pretty smart, plenty bossy, slightly deranged, and far more complex than any animated character has a right to be. "Hey Arnold" is another great cartoon that Nickelodeon produced. In my opinion it was and still is far more superior to Sponge Bob and Rugrats as far as animated shows that are geared toward children go. "Hey Arnold" is like Charles Schulz's "Peanuts" only minus the depression. Arnold is like the anti-Charlie Brown in that he likable, without being a schlub. And then there'd the over all message that the show sends to kids and that is the importance of community and the relationships that we form with in it. And it's all done in a non preachy manner. It's just a great show and I still mourn its cancellation.
But getting back to Helga, what I like about Helga is that she is one of those characters who straddles the line between right and wrong. More often than not, she gives in to her more baser instinct, but the fact that the conflict is there to begin with and just how totally self-aware she is just goes to show just that she's operating on a totally different level than most characters found in these kinds of shows. The Patakis are pretty fucked up as parents go and the show really doesn't pull any punches showing that. So it's no wonder that Helga is the way she is. And the show is so aware of that fact that there is an episode called "Helga on the Couch" in which Helga is forced to see a school psychologist because of her acting out. So if you're in the mood for some old school nicktoons or just want to take a stroll down memory lane, check out "Hey Arnold."
